Generally, there are three schools of thought – namely the English, German and French when it comes to essential oils. They are all very different in how they approach oils and the people who follow each school can get very passionate about what they believe.
The English school uses inhalation and topical application. They tend to err on the side of caution, having a long list of oils that they don’t use and also a limited list of oils that they feel are appropriate on children. They also insist on significantly diluting the essential oils with carrier oil prior to application. They keep things highly diluted. Please refer to the guide below for dilution.
The German school focuses their essential oils primarily by inhalation. They tend to avoid ingestion and topical use. Research shows that therapeutic qualities can be obtained this way, especially where it concerns mood. Aromatic compounds impact the sense of smell and can exert strong effect on the brain (hypothalamus) and limbic system. Inhalation is also one of the most direct and quickest ways to get essential oils into your system because by breathing them in, you are bypassing the skin or stomach.
The French school prescribes the ingestion and undiluted topical application of the therapeutic grade essential oils. The French school developed in the 1930’s in France, although historical documents show ingestion going all the way back to ancient Egypt. Most common form of internal use is to add couple drops into honey, or bread, or small amount of vegetable oil. They also promote the daily ingestion of essential oils to aid in detoxing and immune support.
Can Young Living Essential Oils be used in all this three models?
Yes, you can.
However, due to different international market (for example in Malaysia) which have different import and health regulations that may classify YLEO differently – only the first two model is being use – topical and inhalation. The FDA has separate categories for topical and internal usage, they must be labeled separately. Therefore, in 2016 – Young Living had to provide a different “sku” number and different label in order to provide a way to promote both internal and topical use. The Vitality Oils allow Young Living to stay within the compliant FDA guidelines since the FDA does not allow more than one use per “sku” number.
Young Living’s essential oils and Vitality oils are the exact same oil. Vitality is labeled for internal usage and the regular oils for topical and aromatic usage. The oils are equal in every way–they come from the same farms, from the same plants, are bottled the same way, and so on. The only difference is the label. What’s setting them apart is that the Vitality oils are labeled for internal usage whereas the regular essential oils are labeled for aromatic and topical usage.
Since the regulation in Malaysia differs from other international market, the most common practice of essential oils here are the English and German way – Inhalation and Application.
For application, it is recommended to dilute the essential oils accordingly and be extra cautious when handling hot oils such as Oregano, Thyme, Thieves, Cinnamon Bark, Peppermint etc. Always do a patching test on sensitive area such as forearm, and underneath neck and monitor for 1 – 2 hours. If no irritation occurs, you may proceed to apply to other part of your body. If there is irritation, DO NOT use water to wash it off (because oil and water does not mixed – it will only make it worse). Instead, you should use more carrier oil on it or reduce the essential oil in future usage.
Which is your favorite way to using essential oil? Comment down below 🙂
I personally loves all school of thoughts as the essential oils effect work differently. However, most common way I use is English (both direct inhalation and diffuse) and German (body massage and topical application – vita flex & raindrop therapy). When this 2 method combined, it worked even better.
Since I was diagnosed with sinusitis, I begin using essential oils such as RC, Thieves, Oregano, Lemon, Eucalyptus Radiata, Raven, Peppermint, Frankincense, Purification and Copaiba (to magnify the essential oil). At the beginning, I was only diffusing the oils – the effect is obvious. I’m able to blow out the mucus easily and it is more than before (before essential oil). When I did application on the vitaflex point, chest, sinus area, – the effect is even more obvious. And what most important, no more restless night due to congestion and nasal blockage. The mentioned oils are good for cough and removing phlegm as well.
