Essential Oils School of Thought – English, German & French

Generally, there are three schools of thought – namely the English, German and French when it comes to essential oils. They are all very different in how they approach oils and the people who follow each school can get very passionate about what they believe.

The English school uses inhalation and topical application. They tend to err on the side of caution, having a long list of oils that they don’t use and also a limited list of oils that they feel are appropriate on children. They also insist on significantly diluting the essential oils with carrier oil prior to application. They keep things highly diluted. Please refer to the guide below for dilution.

The German school focuses their essential oils primarily by inhalation. They tend to avoid ingestion and topical use. Research shows that therapeutic qualities can be obtained this way, especially where it concerns mood. Aromatic compounds impact the sense of smell and can exert strong effect on the brain (hypothalamus) and limbic system. Inhalation is also one of the most direct and quickest ways to get essential oils into your system because by breathing them in, you are bypassing the skin or stomach.

The French school prescribes the ingestion and undiluted topical application of the therapeutic grade essential oils. The French school developed in the 1930’s in France, although historical documents show ingestion going all the way back to ancient Egypt. Most common form of internal use is to add couple drops into honey, or bread, or small amount of vegetable oil. They also promote the daily ingestion of essential oils to aid in detoxing and immune support.

Can Young Living Essential Oils be used in all this three models?

Yes, you can.

However, due to different international market (for example in Malaysia) which have different import and health regulations that may classify YLEO differently – only the first two model is being use – topical and inhalation. The FDA has separate categories for topical and internal usage, they must be labeled separately.  Therefore, in 2016 – Young Living had to provide a different “sku” number and different label in order to provide a way to promote both internal and topical use.  The Vitality Oils allow Young Living to stay within the compliant FDA guidelines since the FDA does not allow more than one use per “sku” number.

Young Living’s essential oils and Vitality oils are the exact same oil. Vitality is labeled for internal usage and the regular oils for topical and aromatic usage. The oils are equal in every way–they come from the same farms, from the same plants, are bottled the same way, and so on. The only difference is the label. What’s setting them apart is that the Vitality oils are labeled for internal usage whereas the regular essential oils are labeled for aromatic and topical usage.

Since the regulation in Malaysia differs from other international market, the most common practice of essential oils here are the English and German way – Inhalation and Application.

For application, it is recommended to dilute the essential oils accordingly and be extra cautious when handling hot oils such as Oregano, Thyme, Thieves, Cinnamon Bark, Peppermint etc. Always do a patching test on sensitive area such as forearm, and underneath neck and monitor for 1 – 2 hours. If no irritation occurs, you may proceed to apply to other part of your body. If there is irritation, DO NOT use water to wash it off (because oil and water does not mixed – it will only make it worse). Instead, you should use more carrier oil on it or reduce the essential oil in future usage.

Which is your favorite way to using essential oil? Comment down below 🙂

I personally loves all school of thoughts as the essential oils effect work differently. However, most common way I use is English (both direct inhalation and diffuse) and German (body massage and topical application – vita flex & raindrop therapy). When this 2 method combined, it worked even better.

Since I was diagnosed with sinusitis, I begin using essential oils such as RC, Thieves, Oregano, Lemon, Eucalyptus Radiata, Raven, Peppermint, Frankincense, Purification and Copaiba (to magnify the essential oil). At the beginning, I was only diffusing the oils – the effect is obvious. I’m able to blow out the mucus easily and it is more than before (before essential oil). When I did application on the vitaflex point, chest, sinus area, – the  effect is even more obvious. And what most important, no more restless night due to congestion and nasal blockage. The mentioned oils are good for cough and removing phlegm as well.

Why Young Living is Expensive?

Often you get this remark when people asked what brand of essential oil is the best or you’re using. And when you tell them that you’re using Young Living, their first remark is “Wow !! But, isn’t that expensive?”

Well, I always believe that you’ll get what you paid for. Yes, indeed it is expensive among other brands, but you’re getting 100% pure and therapeutic essential oil distilled, cold pressed etc directly from the respective plants, barks, flowers etc.. Often people opt for the cheaper oil due to budget constraint, but many of them overlook the ingredients.

I came across this posting and I find it beneficial to share with all of you. Please read through the writing by Jami Nato.

Incredible post from Diamond Jami Nato!

“Why we only use Young Living oils. Great and CRAZY info we all need to know! 😳

Shared from Jami Nato…

I love target but this essential oil is in the dollar section and it’s a big no for me !

Here are the ingredients and you can compare them side by side to young living. Not only is this cheap one mostly full of fillers and not the actual oil, it’s number one ingredient is, from my research, problematic. YL’s cedarwood oil has one ingredient : uhmmmm, cedarwood oil.

This could have one drop cedarwood oil from an unknown source and 100 drops filler and fluff. And still be called “natural” and an “essential oil”.

Mineral oil : a by-product of petroleum in the gasoline industry A 2011 report by the National Toxicology Program, for example, stated, “Untreated and mildly treated mineral oils are known to be human carcinogens based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans.”

Cosmetics, on the other hand, supposedly use “cosmetic grade” mineral oil, which is more purified than technical grade. (Keep in mind this is highly unregulated with no testing requirements or accountability )Studies have not linked this oil with cancer, but scientists have expressed concern about it. A 2011 study, for example, reported that contamination could be a relevant source of “mineral oil contamination.” Researchers stated, “There is strong evidence that mineral oil hydrocarbons are the greatest contaminant of the human body, amounting to approximately 1 gram per person. Possible routes of contamination include air inhalation, food intake, and dermal [skin] absorption.”

The went on to remove fat specimens from women who underwent cesarean sections, and also collected milk samples from the women after delivery. They found that both fat and milk samples were contaminated with mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons—and stated that these compounds likely accumulated over time from repeated exposure. “Cosmetics might be a relevant source of the contamination,” they stated.

An earlier 2008 study noted a similar concern about “mineral oil contamination,” and stated that it has “not been proven convincingly” that this contaminant can be tolerated without health concerns. “It has been shown that the molecular mass of the mineral paraffins [another name for mineral oil] resorbed by our body is higher than assumed by the safety evaluation of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Further, probably a majority of the mineral oil products are not ‘white paraffin oils’: they easily contain 30% aromatic component, a substantial proportion being alkylated adding to the health risk.”

In lay terms, that means that these scientists are concerned that much of the mineral oil we are exposed to on a daily basis does contain contaminants that could affect our health. They’re also stating that this topic has not been sufficiently studied to really put our minds at ease. Taken from https://www.bewell.com

The Law of Attraction

Law of Attraction is the belief that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, people can bring positive or negative experiences into their life. The belief is based on the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from pure energy, and that through the process of like energy attracting like energy a person can improve their own health, wealth, and personal relationships.

Carrier Oil, Essential Oil

Undiluted Essential Oil – What will happen?

Essential oils don’t cause skin to burn, UNLESS …..

you used it undiluted. Essential oils are highly concentrated extract from plants. Even it is just 1 drop, but the composition within that 1 drop is far beyond your expectation. Like the saying goes, 1 drop does matter.
You should always read the bottle label all the time for the dilution guide before applying it onto your skin. And most important, ALWAYS do a patching test before applying entirely to your skin. Even if you’ve been using one or more essential oils undiluted to date and you haven’t had a problem, that doesn’t guarantee that you won’t develop sensitization with repeated exposure.
Always do patching test (about 1-2drops of essential oil) on your forearm and observe over 1 – 2 hours before applying all over the skin. If there is any reaction such as rashes, nausea, headaches or other sensitivity occurs :
🌿Add additional carrier oil
🌿Reduce the amount of essential oils used
🌿Reduce the number of essential oils used at one time
🌿Reduce he frequency of application
🌿Drink more water
HOW TO DILUTE? A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil —that can be used to dilute essential oils. Our preferred choice of carrier oil is the Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex, as it helps to nourish our skin, have long shelf life, does not clog pores and will not strain the clothes. It is ideal to use when creating custom blends, formulas and also massage oil.
AVOID Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as mineral oil, baby oil, and petroleum jelly) as carrier oil.
Use it wisely and cautiously. If you have kids at home, keep the essential oil away from their reach.
